Apple has updated its most affordable new smartphone with the iPhone 17e, adding a faster chip, more storage and long-awaited features like Mag-Safe. On paper, it brings more of the core iPhone experience to a lower price point.
But while it improves on its predecessor in meaningful ways, it still feels like a compromise in key areas — particularly design, display and camera flexibility.

Design and Screen: Familiar, Functional, but Dated
The iPhone 17e looks almost identical to the model it replaces, the iPhone 16e, carrying forward the older iPhone design with flat aluminium sides and a glass back. It feels solid, lightweight (around 170g), and comfortable to hold, maintaining Apple’s usual build quality.
However, the front still features a large notch, which now feels outdated compared to modern designs.
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display is sharp and vibrant, with excellent brightness and colour accuracy. But it is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, making it noticeably less smooth than many competing devices — including some far cheaper Android phones.
The screen is good, but not class-leading anymore.
Performance and Battery: Fast and Reliable
The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip, albeit with a slightly reduced GPU. In practice, this makes little difference — the phone is fast, responsive and capable of handling demanding apps and games without issue.
Paired with 8GB RAM and a minimum of 256GB storage, performance is one of the strongest aspects of the device.
Battery life is also impressive. The phone comfortably lasts a full day and often stretches into a second day with lighter use. Most users will only need to charge it every night or even every other night.
The addition of MagSafe further improves usability, enabling a wide range of magnetic accessories and faster wireless charging.
Specifications
- Processor: Apple A19 (reduced GPU)
- Screen: 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED (60Hz)
- Storage: 256GB / 512GB
- RAM: 8GB
- Operating System: iOS 26
- Camera: 48MP rear, 12MP front
- Connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C
- Water Resistance: IP68
- Weight: ~170g
Camera: Good Photos, Limited Options
The iPhone 17e has a single 48MP rear camera, which delivers consistently good results. Photos have strong dynamic range, natural colours and reliable detail across various lighting conditions.
It also supports a 2x crop zoom and improved portrait processing, allowing users to adjust depth after taking a shot.
However, the lack of additional lenses is a clear limitation. There is:
- No ultra-wide camera
- No telephoto lens
- No macro photography mode
This restricts flexibility, especially for users who enjoy experimenting with different perspectives.
For everyday photography, it performs well. But it is not a versatile camera system.
Features and What’s Missing
The iPhone 17e includes most of Apple’s core features:
- Face ID
- Action Button
- USB-C
- MagSafe
- Long-term software support
However, some premium features are missing:
- No 120Hz display
- No Wi-Fi 7
- No Ultra Wideband (UWB)
- No advanced camera system
These omissions are noticeable and reinforce its position as a stripped-down iPhone.
Price
The iPhone 17e starts at ₹64,900 in India for the 256GB model.
It undercuts the standard iPhone 17, but not by a huge margin — making the trade-offs harder to justify for some buyers.
Verdict
Apple continues to improve its “e” series by bringing more core iPhone features to a lower price. The iPhone 17e is faster, more practical and better equipped than before, with strong performance, excellent battery life and useful additions like MagSafe.
However, it still feels like a compromise.
The older design, slower display and single camera limit its appeal, particularly at this price point. It makes the most sense for those who want the cheapest new iPhone available and are willing to overlook missing features.
For everyone else, spending a bit more on a higher end model or even considering alternatives may offer better value.
Pros
- Fast and reliable A19 performance
- Excellent battery life
- 256GB base storage
- MagSafe support
- Premium build quality
- Long software support
Cons
- 60Hz display feels outdated
- Single rear camera limits flexibility
- Old notch design
- Missing premium features (UWB, Wi-Fi 7)
- Still relatively expensive
Final Rating: 7.6 / 10
The iPhone 17e delivers the essential iPhone experience for less — but the compromises are harder to ignore in 2026.
